[Magic Hour]: The time of the day when the stars have aligned in some other time zone, but for that one hour, dawn or dusk, for a short time, everything is perfect. The wind has calmed, the sun gave way to perfect lighting, and the boat is loaded with weight, fuel and friends. There is no other feeling quite like carving across a cove of uncharted glass, launching off a double-up back lit by the sun or looking down at the water and seeing nothing but determination and pure bliss staring back at you. This is “Magic Hour” and this is what wakeboarding is all about.

As a sequel to their debut wake film, “A Single Day”, Remedy Films followed the events and progression of the Georgia and Alabama wake scenes, driven by Singleton Marine Group in the summer of 2011. The film was shot across 4 lakes and all of SMG’s local events.

Remedy used an array of equipment to shoot “Magic Hour”. Much of the over-cranked (slow-mo) shots were captured with the RED One and the Panasonic hpx-500. Also in the arsenal were multiple Canon 7d’s mounted up with Canon L and Zeiss glass, GoPro Hero HD’s and a Panasonic hpx-170. The Kessler Cineslider was used for all dolly shots and moving timelapses.

Magic Hour is a full hour of Magic (see what we did there?)… so grab your favorite beverage, some pretzels, and a comfortable seat… sit back, relax and enjoy!

Coming to my first NAB I had no idea what to expect. I was excited to see CS6 and the
C500 but really did not expect to be blown away by much else. I could not have been
more wrong! Quick highlights and then to the main attraction.

1. The new Zeiss Anamorphic (guessing 24 or 28)-Price $10,000-$20,000
I have never been a huge fan of Anamorphic lenses but to add some flavor to a
shoot this lens could be a great addition to add dynamic to a piece. Seeing this
lens makes me want to try to shoot a doc fully on Anamorphic lenses.

2. Snaproll
If you have not yet heard about this company, you are about to start hearing a lot more about
them. They have developed a drone heli that can carry pretty much any
camera you can throw at it. The capabilities of this heli are pretty amazing. Short list -
GPS enabled so that you can pre-program flight location and duration, you can pilot it from
up to a 150 miles away, 18,000 altitude range, right now has Alexa-M in it, retractable gear so
there is a 360 degree visibility, and to top it all off if everything goes to hell it will turn
around and land it self at home!!!!! Also have to say that Snaproll despite doing a ton of
the heli work for Brain Farm they are super humble guys and so awesome! Got to talk to
them for a while today and was very impressed.

3. Kessler
So they have awesome product and the new Fusion is awesome and limitless.
But that’s not what this is about. Eric Kessler talked to three “kids” today for an hour and
did run off when Philip Bloom made his appearance. And I would understand if he had.
But he explained the whole new Fusion system and def had a blast getting to talk to
him. Kinda took me by surprise but was a very cool experience.

4. Cannon 1DC and 500
So its no surprise that this was going to be one of the highlights for us at
Remedy. We are stoked to have two 300s and the thought of either adding a small B in
the 1DC or a Big A in the 500 is exciting. My first impression of the 1DC was great.
Loved how easy it was to change settings and go from the 1080p to 2k to 4k. Also was
pleased to find out that when it goes to 1080 it is actually using the whole censor and 4k
it is cropping in to a S35 censor. I will say that the 1DC was running super hot after only
being on to what was probably an hour. Makes me concerned about over heating.
Biggest concern with the 500 is no side handle but I’m sure Zacuto was not sad about
this. Last it is a bummer you need an external recorder to grab the 4:4:4: 4K but there
are a ton of great options available here.

Biggest Let down
Red showed Loom on their new 3D 4K projector. Cool projector Loom was super weird
though. Was really looking forward to what Ridley Scotts son would pull off and well it
was weird. Hoping the Timescapes screening is shown on the new projector.

MAIN EVENT- Black Magic Camera
So when I heard the first people talking about the camera I did not believe it.
Black Magic and Camera would never be to words I thought would go together. Then I
heard the price…$3000 for 2.5K Raw then 1080 at Pro Res…got to be a catch right. A
huge catch. So we headed over to see what corner they cut to get to the raw 2k at such
a cheap price. When we got there we saw a beautifully simplistic camera that rocked
what equates to a S16 sensor( think very similar to ikonoshop but cheaper). It will make
a great Doc camera with the Zeiss super speeds that we have currently. Saw some
test footage and could not really tell what was compression from pushing it online or
what was noise in the camera. Native ISO is 850 so it should not struggle in low light.
But the greatest thing was the 13 stops of latitude…more than the C300. I will say that it
is not close to as sharp but that is a given with the censor. Also to note it only ships with
EF mount at this point. They have a lot of kinks to work out such as not using the IS in
the cannon lenses or only having 3 ISO settings in the cameras we saw. They saw they
are shipping in July so probably roll out firmware updates as time goes on. This is def
on my list of buys that could be coming!!! Looking really good!!!

Singleton Marine Group and the Ritz Carlton on Lake Oconee recently hosted a weekend full of lessons and demos from the SMG team riders. Remedy Films went down the the Ritz to capture the weekend. We had a Remedy Alum. bring his chopper so we could capture the team’s ride sessions. It was amazing weekend with a ton of kids learning to ride for the first time and some learning new tricks. Thanks again to The Ritz Carlton and Singleton Marine group for hosting this event and having Remedy Films come capture the highlights!
